Bidding Farewell to VIB Teammates
I want to celebrate the decades of service of a dedicated Team of Operators who have served the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Salem, Virginia for 20 years. he following article is republished with the permission of the VAMC as they recognized the 'smiling voices on the phone' who greet all callers and make the first, and often lasting, impression on patients, family members, visitors, and staff. I share this bittersweet story because this is the final week that these Operators will be employed by Virginia Industries for the Blind.
A recent decision by the VA requires that all contracts awarded by the VA be set aside for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB). Despite the great support, our Operators had with their onsite customers, the Contracting Office had to comply with the new policy, After 10 months of negotiating with the VA and asking that they wait for action on H.R> 4920 in the U.S. Congress that would have safeguarded the AbilityOne contracts such as this one, the VA moved forward.
In the end, VIB is transitioning this contract to a SDVOSB in the telecommunications/call center market. With the strongest possible support of the local VA and with VIB's advocacy, all employees were offered jobs with the new company. So while VIB's ranks will decrease a bit, we take comfort in knowing the professional and experienced Team of Operators at VAMC will continue to serve their customers. We bid tgis Team a fond farewell and wish them all the success with their new employer.
